Addressing the contemporary climate of political and economic globalisation, this seminar featured a range of artists and activists who engage with and contest processes and sites of exclusion, surveillance and the suspension of human rights under state security practices and corporate imperialism.

Participants examined artists' activist networks committed to global justice; how activist practices are interrogating the function of institutional racism and the biopolitics of neo-liberal capitalism, and exploring forms of global citizenship. The seminar featured public actions and more formal academic papers.

Ele Carpenter, Sunderland

Ele Carpenter is an Independent Curator based in England. Her interest is in forms of socially engaged practices and networks of communication (or activism). She recently curated RISK; an exhibition at the ICA in Glasgow, the exhibition, which was preceded by RISK Academy, brought together a range of artists and practices that deal with these issues.

Bart (Anthony Bartley), Artist, Belfast

Tony Bartley has been active as a practising artists since 1990, participating in over fifty events the majority of which have been artist organised events, often in "alternative", ie non art specific , venues. He was involved, to varying degrees, with the Belfast Youth and Community Centre, (a.k.a. Warzone Collective, Giro's) from and in which he co- facilitated various visual arts events. He was visual arts editor of the Big Spoon poetry magizine and worked with other editors and mental health artists and writers groups in other artist led events. This led him, from 1996-2004 to become a staff member with the national schizophrenia fellowship. For the last two years he has been (not very) actively seeking employment in order to concentrate on his art practice - recently exhibiting  new work , "ghost books" at Café Arcadia and the John Hewitt, as well as a current bill posting project in and around Donegal Street.

Martin Krenn, Vienna

Martin Krenn‘s photographic works involve getting former immigrants in various cities to take him on their personalized city tours and take photos of their perspective of the city, also research and activism around current use of properties in Austrian towns formally owned by Jewish families prior to ww2. He also has made photographic documentations of various cities in collaboration with immigrants or descendents of immigrants living in those cities. They take him to locations in the city that they see significant to represent / document. He sees the photographs as produced by the person he works with where he just facilitates the photographic process by pressing a button.

Ange Taggart of My Dads Strip Club / Fan Club

Based in Nottingham UK, Ange is the founder of My Dads Strip Club and co-founder of Fanclub, featured in the BBC documentary series on consumerism Spend, Spend, Spend. Working with store returns policies has become an integral feature of her work as well as a handy way of gaining unofficial arts sponsorship. She is also a recipient of UK funding from Arts admin Artists' Bursary Scheme and Arts Council England.
