Flax Art Studios is an artist run organisation founded in 1989. The studios have since gone on to develop an International Artist in Residency Programme, hosting 4 international artists each year. Flax also runs a Graduating Student Residency and has recently initiated community outreach project.

In June 2003 Flax Arts premises in Edenderry Industrial Estate, North Belfast was destroyed by fire. This disaster, which completely destroyed all the contents, including facilities and artwork, was not the end for the organisation, rather it was taken as an opportunity to take stock and move on.

A year on Flax Art moved into new premises in Corporation Street. Most of the original Flax Artists are taking spaces along with some new additions. An area of 1,320 sq m provides ample room to house an industrial scale workshop, 6 large studio spaces, an international residency space and a communal fabrication area. A large mezzanine area accommodates the office, IT facilities and 5 smaller spaces.

Flaxart also provides office space for BBeyond, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of performance art. www.bbeyondperformance.org

Flaxart studios supports contemporary practice through the provision of subsidised physical resources and a unique working context. Flaxart Studios is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.
